Summer Skin Care

The long, hot days of summer are on their way with the promise of glorious blue skies, long, light evenings, and sunshine. But much as we all love the warmth of the sun, our skin actually doesn’t.

In New Zealand we have the harshest UV rays in the world. Studies have shown that sun exposure is one of the main causes of the signs of premature ageing. And it’s also a key factor in our very high skin cancer rates. So, the absolute cornerstone of good skin care, particularly in summer, is to protect your skin from the sun – every single day.

Sure, you may not spend every summer day frolicking outdoors creating Instagram moments but even when you’re at work you pop out to do some errands. Or to grab a coffee somewhere. And you probably do all that at lunchtime in the heat of the midday sun. UV rays also penetrate glass, so when you’re driving round in your car, or sitting by a window in the office – that’s still sun exposure.

Can I just use a moisturiser with sun protection in-built?

It’s really your choice, the best sun protection is one you will actually use. Plenty of make-up and day moisturisers now include in-built SPF and if you’re not going to be outside much these can be a good solution. Just make sure they offer broad spectrum protection and a reasonable SPF. Oasis Beauty moisturisers all have an SPF of 25 whilst Oasis Beauty BB Creams have an SPF of 15.

However, be aware that often we tend to use less moisturiser than we would sunscreen, meaning that it generally offers less protection. Also, SPF is not cumulative – so if you pop on a moisturiser with SPF 20 and a BB cream with SPF 15, this doesn’t equal an SPF of 35.

With a dedicated sunscreen we tend to apply more and therefore receive a more robust level of sun protection. And, find one you like, and using it everyday becomes second nature.

Sunscreen, moisturiser, make up – which comes first?

Sunscreen or your moisturiser with SPF should be the first thing you put on in the morning after cleansing. Depending on the sunscreen you use you shouldn’t need a separate moisturiser.

Oasis Sun SPF30 has a lovely hydrating base of shea butter and jojoba oil and feels light and non-greasy on the skin. It also dries matt and this means it gives a good base for make-up. So you can put it on and then apply your BB cream or foundation. Effectively it does the job of three products - sun protection, moisturiser and primer - all in one and keeps your skin care simple.

What about outdoor days?

Of course, if you’re heading to the beach or going to spend more than half an hour or so outdoors then it has to be sunscreen not moisturiser. Make sure you apply it thoroughly and be careful not to miss those easily forgotten areas like ears, backs of necks and around the eyes. You should also reapply every two hours during the day and choose a sunscreen that is appropriate for what you’re doing – so if you’re splashing about in the waves make sure it’s water resistant like Oasis Sun SPF 40.

Don’t be fooled into thinking this is all you need though – sunscreen is not a suit of armour. So try to find shade during peak hours and also cover up with a hat and t-shirt or anything else that takes your fancy.

What should my evening skin routine be?

At the end of a hot summer day it’s more important than ever to make sure you cleanse your face. Make-up, sweat and sunscreen can feel like a bit of an overload so make sure you remove all that debris with a gentle cleanser and you can also use a face cloth for some gentle exfoliation.

Using a deep cleansing face mask once a week is also great for drawing out impurities and freshening the skin.

Still after that golden glow?

Well, we recommend you keep on putting on that sunscreen everyday but in the evening, after a shower, try out our Oasis Beauty Super Tan. Active tanning ingredients naturally derived from sugar beets, sugar cane and red raspberries work together to develop a long-lasting tan. So you get that sun-kissed look without the sun damage.

And remember – the only safe tan is a fake tan.
