5-HTP may help support a wide variety of conditions related to low serotonin levels, including mood and depression, fibromyalgia, insomnia, migraines and obesity. 

Early studies may support that 5-HTP may work as well as certain antidepressant drugs to treat people with mild-to-moderate depression. Like some antidepressants 5-HTP may help support increases the levels of serotonin in the brain. 

It has been suggested that 5-HTP may improve symptoms of fibromyalgia, including pain, anxiety, morning stiffness, and fatigue. Some studies have found that many people with fibromyalgia have low levels of serotonin and since 5-HTP raises levels of serotonin in the brain, it may work to support the symptoms of fibromyalgia

A study of people who took 5-HTP seems to suggest that people tend to sleep quicker and sleep more deeply and some researchers recommend 200 - 400 mg at night to stimulate serotonin. 

The effect that 5-HTP has on weight control is still disputed, but some suggest, as 5-HTP supports mood and the feeling of well-being, that this may support to reduce food cravings. This is especially so, for those who may binge eat when suffering from low self-esteem or suffering from anxiety.
